IC Information:
Name: Kano Jurgen / 'Kid' / 'Red' / 'Dark'
Fandom: Kagerou
Timeline: Before Dark causes the 5150
Age: "Older than 19" (ANTI-FAQ)/ 8-10 / Early/late thirties / Mid to late teens
Appearance: Kano is a short guy, shorter than most of the women, approximately 5'0. He's skinny, so much so that in a tank top you can see his ribs in his back and chest. He's got long, streaky red hair a la Axl Rose but less hair band. His arms are absolutely littered with scars from self-harm, both at the bottom and the top halves. He has various other scars on him, sources unknown, aside from the one on his left cheek, which is mentioned to be self-inflicted.
He wears acid-wash clothes, technicolors and essentially anything that ends up making him look like a surfer bum from the 80's. Occasionally, his fashion goes 'Hot Topic Chic' with dark humor t-shirts. He always wears long sleeves or gym socks with the ends cut off on his hands to cover his scarring.
Red is more the type to wear something 'bad ass'. He hates Kano's fashion sense. He likes dark clothes and trench coats that cover Kano's body.
Abilities:
Kano can do nothing. He can flail around with his sword Sigmr Ch'k and get really lucky hits sometimes. He is also a contact psychic without knowing it and can transfer his memories. He can also draw in wandering souls at random, but none of this is marked as a power as it doesn't benefit him at all.
Kid can levitate and read thoughts, but he can't really keep thoughts OUT at the same time, which causes him headaches. He can also use telekinesis but he usually uses it on practical things, like pouring tea.
Red has used the power of 'wind', though it is unsure whether or not this is his own ability or a tap into Kano's, though it is most likely the latter. He can, at least when angry, level a building with telekinesis.
Dark is the one with the power. He has destructive telekinesis that he has well honed. His main power, though, is pyrokinesis. He can manifest and control fire. He has a touched upon 'god mode' that seems to manifest itself as a large dragon made of fire and rage. Whether it can be used outside of the 'zones' is yet unknown.
Personality:
Kano: Kano is a depressing heap of the crazies. He’s usually fairly melancholy, doused with a side of sarcastic and somewhat black humor. Kano talks with a tone that speaks in droves how little optimism he tends to hold, especially for his own situation. It is rare that Kano shows off any air of genuine happiness, though he tries to force along plenty of false tones of contentment that people like Cho and Heyoka see through easily. He doesn’t really have much to be happy about, so one can’t blame him. Well, some can, but not those that know him well.
It’s hard, though, to know Kano well unless you have the unfortunate situation of having residence in his head. He is not a guy that talks about himself or his problems. It is half that he does not trust people and rarely opens up to them, and half that he doesn’t like to revisit his past. There is also a >.1% factor that he just plain doesn’t remember a number of the things that have happened to him.
Kano’s trust issues stem from the homicide-suicide of his sister, Nadia, and mother and the abuse from his father, Doctor Jurgen. While Kano does have the capability of forming bonds, he has a difficult time truly attaching to people. It is a slow process, but when Kano does form a bond of trust, or at least friendship, he becomes loyal to them, though not outwardly, and does learn to care for them. He is self-defensive enough that he keeps his guard up but just open enough that normal friendships are, for the most part, a possibility.
Kano has a number of mental and emotional problems that shape his behavior. The foremost one, the one that is most apparent, is his DID or multiplicity, as referred to by the author, that causes the majority of the other issues. Dissociative Identity Disorder, or DID, is a disorder with many manifestations. In Kano’s case, it involves him compartmentalizing his memories and experiences into different ’zones’.
He has ’split’ at least twice due to traumatizing events. The first split was Kid, and from Kid, Dark was split as the organic protector. Each alter holds some responsibility in Kano’s functionality, which will be addressed in their personality sections. Kano is the main alter, though it is possible he is not the original. He houses at least 3 other personalities, though he is seemingly completely unaware of them or easily blocks out the short periods he has come across them, as they are aware of him.
This leads to Kano ‘losing time’ as he progresses through his life and Grey World. He thinks it only to be him ‘being crazy’ and having episodes, as he has been misdiagnosed by inpatient services. Due to the compartmentalization, there are many events, as previously mentioned, that Kano does not recall. They are blocked from him for protective purposes by his subconscious. Often, Kano fills in events of his life vaguely or with fabrications his brain develops to fill in the gaps.
Another issue, stemming from the DID, is his lack of self-awareness. If he looks in a mirror or sees himself in a photograph, he will not recognize himself. He often confuses his pronouns, due to this, using ‘we’ and ‘I’ in alternation, at times, when referring to himself. He is entirely unaware he is even doing it, when he speaks, and does not register when others mention it to him.
He has a self-destructive streak through him, also symptomatic of the DID. Kano is a frequent cutter, baring numerous scars on his upper and lower arms. He is anorexic, rarely eating unless others around him force him to eat. He only consumes things he hates, because ‘at least he knows he hates them’. He has, on various occasions, deliberately OD’d on substances. He has even attempted to chop off his own hand, missing and catching only two fingers with the knife for reasons yet to be explored. He has very, very low self-esteem and depression that, when provoked too far by events, lead to these attempts or self-harm.
Kano has occasional episodes of delusion. He suffers from auditory and visual hallucinations. During these times, he will banter on nonsensically, often speaking of different gores and horrors he sees happening to himself or those around him. He hears the voices, some memories he can’t identify, some manufactured by his own mind and the ‘monsters’ in it. He tends to get lethargic or catatonic, though somewhat responsive. He is not himself during these episodes and often doesn’t remember what he’s said during them, only knowing he was ‘being crazy’.
Kano, though, is decent at conversation. He’s a pretty big dork, full of pop culture from the 80’s and 90’s and makes a lot of vague references that the people of GW don’t get. He has a fairly good sense of humor, mostly aimed at mocking himself. He can somewhat participate in conversation, though he tends to zone out when people are talking to him and needs help focusing. He’s nice to others, mostly because he can rarely be mean to anyone but himself, as stated by the author, and usually is only capable of a sharp tongue if Red is influencing him. He’s not intensely serious and prefers apathy about things over emotional reactions, when he has that control. He’s capable of some snark with people like the Nick who constantly are abrasive against him, but, for the most part, is generally pleasant if not off-putting because of his depressive and oddball nature, complete with quirky mannerisms. He loves the X-men and 80's Butt Rock.
Kid: Kid is a flower child. He is a strict vegan, loves playing pretend and having tea parties, enjoys painting his toes and is generally fun loving and happy and sweet to everyone. He's a typically well behaved child, though extremely intelligent about things.
Kid has some social issues, though. He is very shy around people. People who have too strong of a presence intimidate him and he tends to shut off around them or cower. He does better when there are people around that he is comfortable with to mediate.
When Kid panics, he stutters. He does scare pretty easy and he is a nervous child, resulting from his upbringing. He is good at planning and keeping his head together when he's panicky, at least in his Zone, but in the real world, he can get overwhelmed and tumble into a panic, as he did during Kano's stay in inpatient care.
This kid is an activist. He will not stand for any meat consumption or purchase or sale. The thing is, Kid can hear the screams of the dead, whether they be humans or animals and Kid just flat out gets along with animals better.
Kid is very creative and has a very colorful, powerful imagination. He loves to color and draw and express himself in colors. He comes up with plenty of play pretend games to keep himself busy. He likes to introduce himself with made up names; some characters, some entirely his own fabrications. He likes to play, he likes cute things, he likes being himself: a kid.
Red: James Valentine Beethoven in life, roughly 30, Red is practically a definition of a sociopath. He is charismatic for manipulative purpose, a rapist, a serial killer, and has absolutely no conscience. He is sadistic, taking pleasure from the pain of others, whether he has caused it or not.
Red is very good at conversation. He is a dick, but a witty one, a sarcastic one. He draws you in one way or another and hooks you into talking with him, whether it be actual back and forth or a flat out argument. He's charming in a dark way and very honest, to the point of being blunt. He learns people and he figures out HOW to talk to them. What he uses is not what will get on their good side, but what will keep their interest, depending on their personality. He never loses the edge on his tongue, but he is pretty well off in the turn of a phrase department.
He has absolutely no qualms against harming another. He revels in it and is merciless. He is most interested in the kill and the lead up to it. He doesn't care about people, they are practically toys to him. He doesn't do things blatantly, but he acts with motivations of causing harm to someone by the end of his motions.
He is cooperative only if the means benefit him. He goes along with the role of Champion for his own plans. He continues on to work with Tcaolin for his benefit. He has no loyalties and will gladly go to whatever side looks more suitable.
Dark: Dark is probably the most simplistic in personality, as he is the broken organic protector alter. He used to have more of a personality, but now he is just, in a word, axecrazy.
Dark suffers from some pretty intense depression because he has failed as a protector and Red's presence has twisted him. He failed Kid. He failed Nadia. He has sealed his mouth in eternal silence after he was told he would die if he ever spoke again. He is socially nonfunctional and can no longer hold conversation. He is obsessed with his dead little sister, constantly trying to revive her.
It is rare that Dark is out, but when he is, he is, of course, silent and is the only organic personality willing to touch others. He is generally quirky and approaches people without much issue.
History: Kano, Kid and Dark all hold one history as the organic alters of one ‘Kano Jurgen‘. Kano was born to a family of freezoner Scientologists. He has two sisters, one who is at present missing and the other, Nadia, his Irish twin, who protected him as a child on the playground. Sometime in his childhood, his mother committed murder-suicide, killing herself and Nadia, which he witnessed. This event caused at least one of Kano’s ‘splits’, possibly his first one ‘Kid’, presuming Kano is the original personality.
His father, known to us only as the Doctor, did experiments on Kano, supposedly aware of his psychic abilities. These things interested him and he took advantage, performing experiments on Kano. These consisted of acts such as shoving him into a morgue drawer with a body for a period of time. This was most likely the trauma that caused the other split. He was bullied at school as a child, saying kids would ‘see how to make the Doctor’s freaky kid cry’. He says, though, that only one person ever could, that person probably being the doctor himself.
In his early teens/late childhood, he ran away and started hitchhiking out of Washington state, with one failed attempt and the second successful. During this period, he ran into James Valentine Beethoven, mid-sexual assault of a woman named Karen, and distracted him by accident. Karen grabbed James’ gun and shot him through the skull. Kano’s abilities sucked in James’s soul, a notorious ‘open door’ problem that Kano’s subconscious has, and Kano went into a fit. His telekinesis went out of control and brought the building down on Kano, resulting in his injury. When he was found, he was taken to a mental institute.
Inpatient care is where he met Heyoka Jones, one week after his accident. He was roomed with Heyoka due to the staff being short and Heyoka being one of the well balanced patients. Kano started to react to James’s, now ‘Red’s’, presence by lashing out and having psychotic episodes, unable to handle the new and horrifying memories. Heyoka left the institute after being declared cured, and Kano was left for a time on his own after an eventful parting.
Months after, Justin, a boy who was Kano's provoker after he accidentally presumed Kano was female and groped him when Kano first arrived, attacked and possibly attempted to sexually assault Kano. ‘Dark’, Kano’s protector personality, took over and killed the boy with his telekinetic abilites, and then Kano, heavily injured, fled, ending up at Heyoka's apartment. He lived with Heyoka for four years she was murdered, presumably by Kano, possibly by Red controlling Kano. Kano lived alone for some time, possibly a year or two. The only event we have been informed of that occurred during this span was Kano’s attempt to lop his hand off, missing and only catching two fingers, presumably out of guilt. The fingers were reattached, but useless.
Time passed, and one day, Kano was visited by a dragonfly. The dragonfly summoned him to Grey World, where he awoke beneath a canopy of trees, a place we would later know to be the tomb of the plague victims. He climbed to the top and met his first mistake, Dali-Dalai. Dali tricked Kano into giving his name and proceeded to kill him, something that would happen to Kano a lot. Cho, Kano’s assigned protector, arrived too late. She attempted to steal his hair, but was thwarted as ’Red’ awoke for presumably the first time and tried to kill her before passing out again.
Mindi, Cho’s friend, arrived the next morning and raised Kano from the dead.
And thus was the start of Kagerou, as Kano finds out he is the Champion of Grey World, meant to fight for the sake of a princess whose fate he is upturning but also fixing at the same time. He gains a sword, allies, and a lot more problems. He soon finds himself at the center of a war and the catalyst for a number of events, while still presuming the whole thing is a delirious dream, much to Cho’s dismay. Kano can barely recall what has happened to him at home, let alone decipher whether or not Grey World is all a fabrication of his brain. His brain, after all, is well experienced in creating pocketed ‘worlds’ as a protective system for his psyche. But Kano has a princess’s soul and body to save, a world of mythical folk to protect and a malicious goddess to take down when he can barely run a line without falling over his own feet. Whether Grey World is real or not is yet to be seen, but Kano and his alters have to play along until they wake up or learn otherwise.
‘Red’ will be addressed separately, presuming he is not an organic and is a walk-in personality/soul. Red was once James Valentine Beethoven. He was a quiet guy on the yearbook in college and a nerd. He tortured and killed animals as a child and generally grew up in a bad environment, though most of him stems from being a sociopath. He started killing in college, presumably, targeting girls with glasses specifically, raping and murdering them. He became a serial killer with several dozen girls’ deaths under his belt. One in particular, one who would become Orbkiller, was one he fell in love with and kept, much like the book the Collector. She refused to love him and give in, so he killed her by beating her to death with a crowbar. She would be the only woman he did not break. It wasn’t until Kano’s coincidental visit to the gas station during his hitch hiking that he was thwarted, killed by Karen while drawn in by Kano’s ‘freaky eyes’. He now resides in Kano’s head as a walk-in, with every intention of taking Kano’s body over and killing Kano to do it. He spends his time making monsters for just such purposes and harassing Kano. He’s a fiend for cheesecake.
Roleplay Sample - Log: Dark:
It had been a long time since he had been in control of the body. Waking up always felt strange, surreal, overwhelming. But, somehow, he was happy. He was happy. He was happy to feel his toes, his hands. He was happy to see the sky. He was happy to feel the smile on his mouth that showed how happy he was.
And he, for some reason, felt happy to see the strange, fluff-eared girl that came up to him and began talking. He was floating without meaning to. It bothered her. Something about her made him happy and he wanted to say hello.
So, with a gently touch and a curious curve to his lip, he took her hand, not really listening to her. Her hands were rough and her fingers strange. She looked a little like the person they'd been living with before. It was the hair... on some days. He smiled and watched her eyes shrink back into her head as she took his hello without consent. A memory, one he held, possibly of the day he was 'born'. The morgue, his home. It was a nice home, right? She would understand it. He knew that, somehow. And so, he waited, waited for her to come back from it. He wanted to see how she liked his present as his toes hovered inches above the ground.
Kano: The world was spinning. Hoo, it was spinning off the damn chain. He hated when his head just didn't fit right in place. He hated when his insides felt like they were slithering away.
'Too many fluorescent lights. Jeez, leave it to a crazy scientist bubble dome to have way too many fluorescent lights,' he thought, laying haphazardly in the hall.
Had he collapsed? Probably, he thought, feeling his head hurt. But that also may have been a result of the annoying, berating, flickering demon lights staring back at him with abandon. He couldn't win this staring match. He was not yet passed the level with the cat. He had to blink, but what would happen if he did? Would his eyes open? Would a bear appear? Would he wake up somewhere else?
What did those lights have planned?
Listening to every ounce of blood gurgle through his veins, he fought his drying eyeballs, keeping his eyelids open by sheer power of will. But involuntary functions are a stronger demon than his stubbornness and his eyelids shut. He blinked.
Somehow he didn't end up in the Twilight Zone when the half second passed and his eyes reopened.
His lips quirked down in a disapproving frown to still see the ceiling, the annoying lights and all the boring white that provoked absolutely no interesting thoughts.
"Even my paranoid psychotic episodes end in disappointment. I think I need to write the producers about this one."
Roleplay Sample - Journal:
Red: Alright, so, this is great and all, but I've gotta ask. Is the the US of A yet? Am I out of the gayest version of Narnia yet or have I run into the industrial level of this shitty video game acid puke of a world?
Of course, you can't beat technology. Being in the dark ages for months was just killer on me. I appreciate the advancement of science. I don't need to go back to shitting in the woods. I never did get the appeal of camping.
So, who's going to be the greeting squad and tell me where I am, because if Cho isn't bitching at me with her tiny tits in my face yet, clearly we are separated and I am lost. Help a guy out, okay?
Kid: Ummm...
So, um, here's a story... i-it's about this really awesome super hero, Pope Arnold Kensington Bond. He was having really neat ideas with his stuffed bear, Agent Smith the Second, when he found some chalk in the art room.
There was a dragon he dreamed up and the dragon was lots of colors. Every color he could think of... so Pope Arnold went to the biggest wall in the place he was living in and decided to share what he saw!
But when he was almost done... he broke the blue chalk he was using because his hand was injured in a tragic hand gliding polo accident. The chalk wasn't his, so he had broke something everyone shared!
Um, Pope Arnold is my friend and Agent Smith II doesn't have any good ideas. So... what should he do?
Questions? Comments? Crazed and creative statements? Those go here.
It should be noted that Red does NOT perform any of the acts he performed while alive while in Kano's body. He has killed opponents, but that is the most extreme thing he has done while inhabiting Kano's mind.
